Background:
According to the National
Cholesterol Education Program, developed by the National Institute of
Health (NIH), more than 200 million Americans (three out of every five) may
be at risk for high cholesterol, a condition that is generally
asymptomatic.
Cholesterol screening is a fast,
simple and cost-effective component used to assess the risk of heart
disease, the No. 1 killer of Americans.
Once screened, patients are
often motivated to take action to improve their health. In fact,
according to a 2001 cholesterol screening survey, one-third of patients
with total cholesterol levels over the recommended 200 mg/dl, sought more
information about managing their cholesterol with their physician.
With
the Cholestech LDX System physicians
can test patients for Total Cholesterol, HDL,
Triglycerides, LDL, Glucose, ALT/AST, hs-CRP,
review test results, and provide counsel on
therapeutic options - all in the same office
visit.

Product Overview:
Cholestech's LDX System
uses a single drop of blood on a disposable test cassette and takes just
five minutes to generate a lab-accurate, comprehensive measurement of a
patient's cholesterol levels. The speed and ease of the LDX System
enables doctors to counsel patients at the time of the test - a tremendous
therapeutic advantage over traditional lab testing and a more convenient
option for patients.
The LDX
System can
measure a patient's lipid profile (total cholesterol,
HDL, LDL, triglycerides, blood glucose) and ALT/AST
- a test that assesses liver function in patients
on certain drug therapies, such as statins.
These simple tests can be used to determine a patient's
risk for heart disease or to regularly monitor patients
already undergoing treatment for these conditions.
The LDX System consists
of a small analyzer that uses disposable test cassettes. The LDX is
"CLIA-waived" under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement
Amendments of 1988 and CRMLN Certified. The system is simple to use, requires little
training and is as reliably accurate as those tests offered in a
lab. In most cases, Medicare and third-party health insurance
reimburse the costs of the LDX System tests.
