The prostate gland is an important part of the male reproductive
system and lies just below the bladder and in from of the rectum.
It’s about the size of a walnut and produces the liquid part of semen
that transports sperm. Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein
produced by the prostate gland that is measurable in the blood through
laboratory analysis. An excessive amount of PSA could be an indication
of a serious health problem and should be further evaluated by a physician.
As men age, they are progressively at higher risk for prostate disease
such as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate cancer. This
PSA Test will measure the level of prostate specific antigen in the
blood and is one of the best methods available for monitoring overall
prostate health. The American Urological Association recommends that
all men over the age of 40 receive an annual prostate evaluation consisting
of a PSA test and a digital rectal exam. However, African American
men and those with a family history of prostate cancer should begin
testing even earlier.
The PSA Prostate Cancer Screening Test provides the same results
that can be obtained from your local medical laboratory without the
high cost and inconvenience of doctor’s appointments, laboratory fees,
and often painful and unnecessary procedure of direct venous or arterial
blood draws. This test is conveniently performed at home, takes less
than ten minutes, and results are obtained in approximately the same
time as those routinely ordered through a physician.
Complete instructions are enclosed, and sample collection is quite
easy and virtually painless. A single finger nick using an enclosed
lancet is all it takes to draw the sample needed. Simply deposit the
drops of blood on the collection card and wait 15 minutes for it to
dry. Then place the card in the enclosed postage paid envelope along
with your completed Test Request Form, and drop in the nearest US
mailbox.
After your sample is analyzed at the Laboratory, you will receive
a report by return mail that will provide you with important information
you and your physician can use to determine your overall prostate
health. If a serious irregularity is discovered, early detection greatly
increases your chances for successful treatment.

TSH
Laboratory Collection Kit

The
thyroid controls how quickly the body burns energy, makes proteins,
and how sensitive the body should be to other hormones. The TSH test
is used to evaluate thyroid function and to aid in the discovery of
either an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or an underactive thyroid
(hypothyroidism). The test is frequently conducted in advance of physician
ordered T3 and T4 testing when thyroid abnormalities are discovered.
TSH testing is also used at regular intervals to monitor the effectiveness
of treatment for a thyroid disorder.
A few common symptoms of an underactive thyroid include:
- Weight gain
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Dry Skin
- Cold Intolerance
- Hair Loss
- Forgetfulness
A Few of the common symptoms of an overactive thyroid are:
- Weight Loss
- Nervousness
- Fatigue
- Heat Intolerance
- Muscle Weakness
- Insomnia
- Heart Palpitations
Biological Risk Factors for Thyroid disease include:
- Known thyroid disorder
- Goiter
- Diabetes
- Anemia
- Premature Gray Hair
Family History Risk Factors include
- Diabetes
- Pernicious Anemia
- Thyroid Disease
- Primary Adrenal Insufficiency
The TSH Thyroid Screening Test provides the same results that can

HbA1c
Laboratory Collection Kit

When
you have diabetes, you and your doctor work to keep your blood glucose
(sugar) at ideal levels. Doing so keeps you feelings better and may
even help prevent of delay the start of complications such as nerve,
eye, kidney, and blood vessel damage. One way to keep track of your
blood sugar level is to test it at home. However, these test only
tell you what your blood sugar level is at any one time. Suppose you
want to know how you’ve done over a period of time?
An A1c (aka glycated hemoglobin or HbA1c) test gives you a snapshot
of your average blood glucose control for the past 2 to 3 months.
These results give you a relatively good idea of how well your diabetes
treatment plan is working.
The recommended goal for a diabetes patient should be to keep to
daily blood glucose levels near the normal range of 70 mg/dl to 120
mg/dl before meals and under 140 mg/dl at 2 hours after eating. And
A1c number above 8% is considered poor blood sugar control, while
7% or lower is the ideal and usually considered the goal for most
diabetics. The A1c results should be used by the patient and his or
her doctor to develop or modify treatment strategies.
Diabetes usually takes its toll slowly, gradually attacking the eyes,
organs, and extremities. Continuous control is a must! The Diabetes
Control and Complication Trial (DCCT) has shown that the lower the
A1c number, the better the patient’s chances of slowing or even preventing
serious damage to the eyes, nerves, and kidneys. Any improvement in
these numbers has the potential to reduce complications.
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends the A1c test as
the best way to determine if a patient’s blood sugar is under control
over time. The ADA further recommends that an A1c test be performed
every 3 months for patients on insulin, during treatment changes,
or during periods when blood sugar levels have been recorded as high.
Patients taking oral medications, with stable blood sugar levels,
should take the test every 6 months.
Complete instructions are enclosed, and sample collection is quite
easy and virtually painless. A single finger nick using an enclosed
lancet is all it takes to draw the sample needed. Simply deposit the
drops of blood on the collection card and wait 15 minutes for it to
dry. Then place the card in the enclosed postage paid envelope along
with your completed Test Request Form, and drop in the nearest US
mailbox.
After your sample is analyzed at the Laboratory, you will receive
a report by return mail that will provide you with important information
you and your physician can use to access your diabetes control. Maintaining
health blood sugar levels is one of the most important steps you can
take in preventing or reducing damage caused from diabetes.

hs-CRP

C-reactive
protein (CRP) is produced by the body during periods of inflammation.
Though not condition specific, it is a significant indicator of some
current health problem. Many things can cause an increase in CRP (from
osteoarthritis, to cancer, to common cold or other infection). However,
In the absence of any specific disease, an increased CRP level poses
a significant risk of heart disease. As a matter of fact, CRP is the
first indicator of heart disease recommended by the American Heart Association
in over 20 years, specifically high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP).
The hs-CRP test adds an important additional piece of information
to a doctor’s traditional assessment of overall cardiac health. CRP
is produced when the arteries around the heart become inflamed by
atherosclerosis. Even in the absence of traditional blockages, inflamed
artery walls can sometimes become softened and develop weak areas
that can suddenly rupture. Plaque also develops more quickly in inflamed
arteries, increasing the risks of heart attack or stroke.
Healthy men and women with normal cholesterol levels are still at
risk for future heart attack if they have elevated levels of hs-CRP.
Even people who have hs-CRP results in the high end of the normal
range have 1.5 to 4 times the risk of having a heart attack as those
individuals with CRP values in the lower half.
It is recommended that a person wait at least 2 weeks after an acute
of chronic inflammatory event (such as a cold, infection, or tissue
trauma) to measure hs-CRP. Note that post-menopausal women on hormone
replacement therapy will usually have a higher-than-normal CRP level.
Complete instructions are enclosed, and sample collection is quite
easy and virtually painless. A single finger nick using an enclosed
lancet is all it takes to draw the sample needed. Simply deposit the
drops of blood on the collection card and wait 15 minutes for it to
dry. Then place the card in the enclosed postage paid envelope along
with your completed Test Request Form, and drop in the nearest US
mailbox.
After your sample is analyzed at the Laboratory, you will receive
a report by return mail that will provide you with important information
you and your physician can use to determine overall health and help
predict a cardiovascular or stroke event and help direct further evaluation
and therapy. If a serious irregularity is discovered, early detection
greatly increases your chances for successful treatment.
